How to Get Featured in Google AI Overview for SMEs

How do you get featured in Google AI Overview? See how Google picks its sources and the 5 practical steps to get your brand cited.

Think about the last time you Googled something and a Google AI Overview appeared at the top. You probably read it, got your answer, and never clicked anything else.

This also means that when your customer searches, Google answers them directly, and they only see the brands named inside that answer. If yours is not one of them, you are practically invisible. In Malaysia, searches for “ai overview” doubled in the past 12 months, from 1,100 to 2,400 a month.

The good news is that you do not need special tricks to get featured. You just need normal SEO, done well and in the right order.

How Does Google Choose Which Sites Appear in an AI Overview?

Google uses the same search index and the same ranking systems for AI Overviews as for normal search results. Google says: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” Your page only needs to be indexed and allowed to show in Google Search with a snippet.

In short: if you want your page to appear in AI Overview, it must rank on Google first.

You are competing for one of very few slots. The typical AI summary is only 67 words long, and 88% of summaries list three or more sources. Google picks a few websites as sources because no single website has the whole answer. So your goal is to be one of them.

Here is a detail that works in your favour if you run a smaller website. Google builds each answer using a method called query fan-out. When users type a question, Google splits the question into several smaller, related searches in the background, then combines the results into one answer. So if one of your pages answers one small, specific question very well, Google can still pick you as a source, even if you do not rank number one for the main search.

In the search terms or prompts we track for clients, the pages that get linked to usually have three things: a short and complete answer near the top of the page, proof that the content comes from real experience, such as a named author, real prices, or results from actual projects, and no technical problems that block Google’s crawler.

You do not need new tools for any of this. On top of the usual SEO work you’re doing, here are some additional things to take note of:

  1. Answer the question first, explain later. Research found that 60% of searches starting with a question word (how, what, why) showed an AI summary. So write your headings as questions, and put a complete answer in two or three sentences directly under each heading.

  1. Show proof that an AI can quote. Put a named author with real credentials on your articles, and use statistics with dates. This adds credibility to your content, so AI platforms are more likely to cite you when you publish.

  1. Fix the technical basics. Your page must be crawlable, indexed, and allowed to show a snippet. Structured data such as Article, FAQPage, and LocalBusiness markup helps Google understand your page.

  1. Get your brand mentioned on other websites. AI systems decide which brands to trust by reading directories, news sites, reviews, and forums, not only your own website.

  1. Track citations, not only rankings. Google Analytics’ AI Assistant channel now lets you see how much traffic comes from AI platforms, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Grok. It excludes Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode, so it tells you whether AI sends you visitors, not whether you appear in an AI Overview. If you’re already using an SEO tool, its AI visibility tracker runs the same prompts for you every month and shows how your site performs on these engines.

What You Can Skip (and How Long It Really Takes)

Before you implement the latest AI tips and tricks you see online, check what Google itself says. Here are some myths Google has debunked:

  1. You do not need an llms.txt file (a special text file some people add for AI tools) or any other special code for you to appear on Google AI Overview or other AI tools.
  2. You don’t need to write in a specific way just for generative AI search.
  3. You do not need to chop your content into small pieces for AI to read.
  4. Buying backlinks or paying for fake brand mentions does not help.

Google says to spend that effort on real, useful content instead.

Once you’ve done the above, the next question is how long until your website gets cited on AI. In our experience, Perplexity and Gemini usually start citing a site within 2 to 3 months. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews usually take 4 to 6 months of steady publishing and authority building.

Before Starting, Find Out Where Your Brand Stands

Before you change anything on your website, measure where you are today. Find out whether the AI engines mention your brand at all, and which competitors they name when someone asks about your products. Once you can see that, you will know where to start.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get featured in Google's AI Overview?

It usually takes 4 to 6 months. In our client work, Google AI Overview citations come slower than other engines, because your normal Google rankings need to improve first. Perplexity and Gemini usually cite new sources within 2 to 3 months.

Do I need any special tracking tool or code inserted in my website to appear in AI Overview?

No. You do not need any tracking tool or special code. Google's AI optimisation guide says llms.txt files and other special markup are not needed, because Google Search does not use them. Your page just needs to be crawlable, indexed, and allowed to show with a snippet. Structured data helps as well.

Will AI Overviews reduce my website traffic?

Most likely yes, for some searches. Research shows that when an AI Overview appears, people click a normal search result in only 8% of visits, compared to 15% when there is no summary. But the people who do click are usually closer to enquiring or purchasing. So it still pays to prioritise getting your brand into Google's answer.

Do I need to rank number one on Google to appear in an AI Overview?

No, but you do need to rank at least in the top 100. Google uses the same index and ranking systems for AI Overviews as for normal results, so a page that cannot rank cannot be cited. Google also builds each answer from several smaller related searches, so a page that answers one specific question well can be picked as a source even if it is not the top result.

Is Google AI Overview the same as ChatGPT, Gemini, or AI Mode?

No. AI Overview is the summary that appears at the top of normal Google search results. AI Mode is a separate conversational tab inside Google. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot are separate AI tools with their own sources. It is best to work on all of them, but track them separately, because appearing in one does not mean you appear in the others.
